Southwest Airlines has announced a series of changes to its seating and fare policies. The modifications come amid actions by Elliott Management, an investment firm that acquired over a 10% stake in the airline. These changes include new fare bundles, seating options, and cardmember benefits, which the airline detailed on its official website.

The airline will continue to offer four fare bundles, but with updated names and benefits. "Business Select will become Choice Extra and will offer the chance to select an extra legroom seat while booking. It will also include two checked bags for free (weight and size limits apply), earlier boarding, ticket refundability, day-of-travel perks, and the highest Rapid Rewards points earn ratio." Meanwhile, the "Anytime" fare is rebranded to "Choice Preferred," and the "Wanna Get Away Plus" becomes "Choice."

The "Wanna Get Away" fare will be replaced by "Basic" on May 28, 2025. For those who choose Basic, seats will be assigned at check-in, and the fare will be nonrefundable and non-changeable, although customers can upgrade if needed.

Southwest has also revised its seating options. The cabin will feature Standard Seats with standard legroom, mostly located at the back, and Preferred Seats at the front. Extra Legroom Seats will be available at the front and exit rows, featuring more legroom, early bin access, extra snacks, and complimentary premium beverages. These seating arrangements are part of a retrofitting program starting May 1, 2025.

For Rapid Rewards cardmembers, the updated benefits will include seat selection and boarding advantages. "Plus and Plus Business will receive Standard seat selection 48 hours prior to departure, when available, along with a boarding benefit and a free first checked bag," and for higher-tier cardmembers, additional seating benefits and upgrade options will be available.

Southwest Airlines attributed these updates to criticism from Elliott Management, which has pointed out the airline's management issues and financial challenges. These adjustments also coincide with new board members making strategic decisions to adapt to the company’s needs.
