Lufthansa Group announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2025, revealing that all its passenger airlines experienced losses. The results exclude ITA Airways, whose performance was reported under operating results from equity investments and showed a year-on-year decline.

Lufthansa Group's overall operating losses improved, yet its passenger airlines showed worse performance compared to the same period in 2024. The five airlines under the group reported a 6% increase in both revenue and operating expenses, contributing to a net loss of €885 million ($1 billion) for the quarter, compared to a €734 million ($835.9 million) net loss in Q1 2024. Traffic revenue rose by 8% to €6.3 billion ($7.1 billion) while total revenue increased by 10% year-on-year to €8.1 billion ($9.2 billion).

Despite reduced fuel costs by 1%, the Lufthansa Group indicated that increased fuel consumption, up by 4% year-on-year, neutralized the benefits of the lower fuel prices. Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr remarked, “Demand continues to be robust for the second quarter. I am pleased that our guests are benefiting from significantly improved punctuality and stability, particularly with our core brand Lufthansa. Operationally, we had our best start to the year in ten years.”

All of Lufthansa Group's airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, and SWISS, reported negative earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) for Q1, a period deemed 'slower' for Northern Hemisphere airlines. While some airlines improved their EBIT from Q1 2024, others saw a decline. Lufthansa revealed operational stability efforts, launched in July 2024, have begun to yield cost-saving benefits.

Passenger airlines posted revenue of €5.9 billion ($6.7 billion), marking a 6% increase. However, operating expenses rose equally by 6% to €7 billion ($7.9 billion), resulting in slightly worse EBIT compared to Q1 2024. The group operated 201,303 flights, a 4% increase from the previous year, transporting 24.2 million passengers.

ITA Airways' results were excluded from the passenger airline segment following Lufthansa Group's acquisition of a 41% stake in the Italian airline for €325 million ($370.3 million) in January 2025. The operating result from equity investments worsened to a €38 million ($43.2 million) loss, mainly due to the performance of the Sun Express joint venture and ITA Airways.

Looking forward, Lufthansa Group remains optimistic about a strong summer travel season, driven by robust demand for air travel, particularly to popular European destinations. However, the company expressed caution over macroeconomic uncertainties, notably tariffs imposed by the US on China, affecting future forecasts. A task force has been established to monitor economic conditions and adjust operations as needed.
