UNI Global Union General Secretary Christy Hoffman has issued a strong call to action in recognition of International Workers’ Day, held on May 1. Hoffman highlighted a pressing violation of workers' rights in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a unionist whom the U.S. government allegedly separated from his family.

"On May Day, we come together to march, to inspire and to take stock of our collective power. This year, as we celebrate working-class solidarity, I have an urgent request: Stand with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a union member who has been violently separated from his family by the U.S. government," said Hoffman.

Abrego Garcia was reportedly taken in March and deported to a high-security facility in El Salvador, despite a court order from 2019 which prevented his deportation. The Trump administration classified his removal as "an administrative error." Furthermore, the U.S. Supreme Court has ordered the government to act to bring him back.

"The Trump administration claims - implausibly - that they have no power to direct El Salvador to do this, and further insist that Kilmar will never return. And the President of El Salvador has taken the position he will not send Kilmar back to the United States."

Hoffman urged global action by asking for support from individuals worldwide to press El Salvador for Abrego Garcia’s return. "The world must insist that El Salvador change its position so please download, adapt and deliver - via email, mail or in person - this letter to the Salvadoran embassy nearest you."

The UNI Global Union underscores the principle of collective solidarity, urging involvement in the plight of Abrego Garcia to uphold the mantra "injury to one is an injury to all."
