Qantas, Australia's national airline, has long been a vital link between the country and the rest of the world. Known as the Flying Kangaroo, Qantas operates over 11,228 flights in May alone and features six different aircraft types in its mainline fleet.

Founded in November 1920 as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service, Qantas began as a small mail and passenger service before expanding into international travel by partnering with Imperial Airways to form Qantas Empire Airways. This partnership allowed it to launch international routes using de Havilland DH.86 aircraft. Today, Qantas is Australia's largest airline, offering more domestic and international flights than any other carrier.

The Boeing 737-800 is the most frequently operated aircraft by Qantas this month. The airline will conduct 8,986 flights using this model, serving more than 1.5 million passengers domestically and on short-haul international routes such as Melbourne to Queenstown. The aircraft is configured with two classes: business class with 12 seats and economy class with 156 seats.

Qantas also operates Airbus A330-200s and A330-300s for high-demand domestic routes like Sydney to Perth or between Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Internationally, these models fly routes including Sydney to Hong Kong or Honolulu. In May alone, these aircraft will operate 1,335 flights combined.

Another key part of Qantas' fleet is the Airbus A380 used for long-haul international flights such as those to Dallas or Los Angeles. In May, there are scheduled to be 305 flights using this model with an average distance of over 7,000 miles per flight.

For ultra-long-haul services like Perth direct to London Heathrow Airport or Melbourne to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (via Auckland), Qantas relies on its Boeing 787-9 fleet which will undertake 596 flights in May.

In addition to passenger services, Qantas operates several subsidiaries under the Qantas Group umbrella including Jetstar—a low-cost carrier—and regional operator QantasLink among others involved in freight operations or loyalty programs.

Looking forward towards future expansion plans dubbed 'Project Sunrise', Qantas aims at launching direct non-stop commercial services from Sydney directly connecting cities like London & New York utilizing new Airbus A350-1000 planes which promise innovations tailored specifically for extended duration journeys exceeding twenty hours thereby redefining standards within aviation industry worldwide.
