The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has highlighted the significant economic contribution of the aviation sector to Kenya. According to IATA, the industry contributes USD 3.3 billion to Kenya's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supports 460,000 jobs. Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, emphasized that "Kenya's aviation sector is a vital economic driver" with potential for further growth as Africa's aviation market is projected to expand by 3.7% over the next two decades.
Walsh noted that achieving this potential requires efficient infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The organization outlined three key priorities for Kenya: infrastructure development, passenger and cargo facilitation, and training.
In terms of infrastructure, IATA advocates for collaboration with airline stakeholders and adherence to global standards as Kenya expands its airport facilities. This approach is seen as essential for maintaining Kenya’s status as a leading hub in East Africa.
