Qantas is set to resume international flights from Adelaide with a new seasonal route to Auckland, New Zealand. The service will begin on October 31 and run until May 3, marking the airline's return to international travel from Adelaide after several years. Qantas currently operates around 280 domestic flights per week from Adelaide.

The new route will compete with Air New Zealand, which has long offered year-round service between Adelaide and Auckland. The last time there was competition on this route was when Qatar Airways operated it during the COVID-19 pandemic until September 2023. Jetstar Airways, a low-cost subsidiary of Qantas, also previously flew this route until 2020.

Qantas plans to operate the route four times a week using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, adding approximately 30,000 seats over the season. In addition to this development, United Airlines recently announced its own seasonal service connecting San Francisco and Adelaide.

Cam Wallace, CEO International for Qantas Group, commented: "Today we’re celebrating two huge milestones in Adelaide – launching a new direct international flight and our first Qantas Business Lounge at Adelaide Airport. This is fantastic news for our South Australian customers who will have access to a direct international flight to Auckland, as well as opening up connections to New York via Auckland."

The new connection offers passengers traveling to New York City an easier one-stop itinerary through Auckland. Qantas already runs a Sydney-Auckland-New York service up to four times weekly with its Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

Air New Zealand will now face increased competition on its routes between Australia and the United States. However, passengers might benefit from more competitive fares due to this added competition.

Additionally, Qantas has invested in upgrading facilities at Adelaide Airport by reopening its Domestic Business Lounge. The lounge spans over 10,000 square feet and features local artwork and design inspired by South Australian landmarks such as the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and Flinders Chase National Park.

Passengers flying internationally can still enjoy amenities at the new Business Class lounge located just past security screening points before proceeding through immigration facilities into the terminal's international section.
