United States aviation safety regulators have proposed temporary limits on flights to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) due to ongoing operational challenges. The proposal suggests capping arrivals at 28 per hour to mitigate delays caused by recent radar and radio outages.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had previously suggested limiting total flight operations per hour at the airport to 56, aiming to reduce congestion while a major runway undergoes renovation. According to Bloomberg, the FAA plans to continue limiting arrivals to 34 per hour through October 25, even after construction concludes on June 15.

United Airlines, the largest operator at Newark, could be significantly affected by these capacity reductions. The airline recently engaged in discussions with FAA officials about alleviating air traffic controller strains at this busy hub. The FAA has not yet commented on the situation.

A final decision from the FAA is expected no earlier than May 28, following a public comment period. This proposal comes amid broader concerns about aging technology and understaffing issues in U.S. control towers. On April 28, radar screens went dark at Newark, and communication with aircraft was lost, necessitating guidance from off-site controllers in Philadelphia.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy adjusted his wife's travel plans to avoid potential delays at Newark but emphasized that this was not due to safety concerns. Critics argue that the FAA's proposal is only a temporary fix for deeper issues within air traffic control infrastructure.
