Vienna International Airport has announced that it achieved a new record in passenger numbers in 2024, serving over 31.7 million passengers. This marks a slight increase from its previous record of 31.6 million passengers in 2019. Flughafen Wien AG, the airport's operator, also recorded its highest revenue and expects growth to continue through 2025.

Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, commented on the achievement: "2024 was an absolute record-breaking year for Vienna Airport and the best in our 70-year history. This shows that the crisis related to the coronavirus pandemic is no longer negatively impacting business results, and our upswing is continuing."

Austrian Airlines remains the largest carrier at Vienna Airport with a market share of around 46%. Low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Wizz Air have also increased their operations at VIE, accounting for almost 30% of the market.

The airport reported a significant rise in local passenger numbers by 8.9%, totaling over 24.86 million, while transit traffic grew by 2.1% to more than 6.75 million passengers.

In addition to its passenger records, VIE handled its highest-ever cargo tonnage at nearly 298,000 tonnes, surpassing its previous high from 2019.

Flughafen Wien AG's entire portfolio includes international investments like Malta Airport and Kosice Airport, collectively handling over 41.4 million passengers last year.

Looking forward to 2025, Vienna Airport anticipates modest growth with new routes contributing to this trend. The airport plans to offer direct flights to numerous destinations this summer season.

Jäger added: "We anticipate slightly growing passenger volumes in 2025, and positive impetus provided by additional flight connections."

Vienna Airport is also undergoing a major expansion project at Terminal 3 expected to open by 2027 with an investment of €420 million ($468 million). The expansion will add extra gates and enhance retail and dining spaces.

In an interview with Travel And Tour World, Jäger expressed hopes that this development will elevate VIE's status: "With this extension, we aim to provide a world-class experience for travelers and position ourselves as a five-star airport by 2030."
