In recent weeks, North American airlines have expanded their routes to Italian cities beyond the traditional hubs of Rome and Milan. The focus has been on popular tourist destinations like Naples and Venice, but new routes also include Catania, Palermo, and Lamezia Terme. Compared to 2019, direct flights from North America to these secondary Italian cities have increased by 98.6% in 2025.

On May 16, Air Canada introduced a new route from Montréal–Trudeau International Airport to Naples International Airport. This service will operate four times a week until October 24 using Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Mark Galardo of Air Canada commented that the new route "not only unites two great cities but also further connects two great countries."

Air Canada's seasonal flights reflect a broader trend among North American carriers focusing on Italy's secondary cities during peak travel months. Between May and October, Air Canada plans 93 departures on this route.

American Airlines has added two new routes: Chicago O'Hare to Naples and Dallas/Fort Worth to Venice. In June, it will operate four routes excluding Milan and Rome.

Delta Air Lines is launching flights from New York-JFK to Catania for the first time since at least 2000. Additionally, Delta will offer flights from Atlanta to Naples with its A330-200s.

United Airlines announced Palermo as a new destination for summer 2025, making it the only U.S. airline flying there since at least 2000. United will also serve Italy from San Francisco International Airport to Rome-Fiumicino.

Air Transat is planning routes from Toronto-Pearson to Lamezia Terme and Venice without competition from Air Canada on some itineraries.

Overall, these expansions highlight an increasing interest in connecting North America with Italy's less-traveled destinations.
