SAS has reintroduced flights from Copenhagen to Seattle, marking a significant step in its expansion into the US market. The airline, which had previously served Seattle until 2009, is launching several transatlantic routes this month. This move comes as SAS continues to expand its network after joining SkyTeam in September 2024.

The new route to Seattle will operate five times weekly using the Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The last flight of the season is scheduled for October 24, before SAS and other northern carriers transition to their winter schedules.

SAS's current US network includes ten airports with varying frequencies. Notably, routes such as Copenhagen to Boston and Washington Dulles switch from widebody aircraft in summer to narrowbody in winter. This adjustment allows the airline to maintain frequency while managing seat availability during off-peak seasons.

Anko van der Werff, CEO of SAS, indicated at Routes Europe in April 2024 that the airline plans to gradually dismantle its Star Alliance-based network. Although no specific timeline was provided, he mentioned potential changes like replacing Chicago with Atlanta and Newark with JFK.

Despite these strategic shifts, some routes remain active. For instance, Newark still hosts three SAS routes even after the carrier returned to New York JFK in 2023 following a long hiatus. Oslo flights resumed on March 30, 2025.

In recent years, SAS has made several adjustments to its US services. In 2023, it ended routes from Aalborg and Gothenburg to Newark due to low seat occupancy rates and scheduling challenges. However, Werff emphasized that these were not failures but learning experiences regarding revenue sharing among partners and schedule optimization for future services.
