Ha McNeill Acting Administrator | Transportation Security Administration

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are preparing for a busy Memorial Day travel weekend, marking the start of the peak summer travel season in the United States. From May 22 to May 28, the TSA expects to screen over 18 million travelers as REAL ID compliance requirements take effect for the first time.

To ensure smooth security lines, TSA PreCheck enrollment will be utilized, and passengers are advised to follow smart packing guidelines. The FAA anticipates record flight activity this summer, with an average of 54,000 daily flight operations nationwide. Despite infrastructure and air traffic control issues at major facilities like Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), weather is expected to be the primary cause of delays.

TSA Acting Administrator Ha McNeill stated, "TSA is ready for the additional passenger volume, and we look forward to welcoming families traveling during this peak period. As a friendly reminder, to ensure a smooth screening experience, bring acceptable forms of ID like your REAL ID."

The increase in passenger traffic coincides with the rollout of REAL ID requirements that began on May 7. Passengers must present a REAL ID-verified driver's license or passport. Since its implementation, 93% of travelers have presented acceptable identification. Those without a REAL ID may face additional screening but can still travel.

To avoid delays, passengers should keep carry-ons organized and compliant with TSA rules. For guidance, they can text "AskTSA" to 275-872 or reach out via X. At security checkpoints, IDs should be ready for inspection. TSA PreCheck can expedite screening, and children under 17 are encouraged to accompany enrolled adults.

As summer travel peaks approach, concerns about delays due to outdated technology and understaffing at air traffic control facilities persist. In Florida's airspace, new ultra-high altitude sectors have been introduced in Jacksonville's control area to reduce delays. At EWR, capacity constraints have been imposed by the FAA to address these challenges while technological upgrades and staffing boosts are underway.
