BA CityFlyer | Wikipedia

BA CityFlyer, a subsidiary of British Airways founded in 2007, operates from London City Airport (LCY) with 20 aircraft serving 33 destinations. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, BA CityFlyer is set to conduct 1,288 departures from LCY in May 2025. The average journey distance for these flights is approximately 450 miles.

BA CityFlyer was established after British Airways sold BA Connect to Flybe but retained operations at London City Airport. Initially, it operated ten Avro RJ100 jets and later added two Avro RJ85s in 2008. In the same year, the airline expanded its fleet with an order for Embraer E-jets. Despite facing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and withdrawing planned summer flights from Southampton Airport, BA CityFlyer reported a profit increase of 28% in 2018.

Cirium's data reveals that BA CityFlyer currently flies 19 routes from London City Airport. The most frequent route is to Edinburgh with 182 departures scheduled this month, offering over six million available seat miles. Other popular routes include Dublin and Amsterdam. Conversely, routes such as Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport have only one flight scheduled.

Since retiring its last Embraer E170 in 2021, BA CityFlyer's fleet consists solely of Embraer E190s. This aircraft type has been a staple since the airline received its first E190 in 2010. However, with the original E-Jet series gradually ceasing production except for the E175 model due to US market demand, future fleet decisions remain uncertain.

At London City Airport, BA CityFlyer faces limited competition due to operational constraints like runway length and movement restrictions. Other airlines such as Loganair and KLM also operate at LCY but on a smaller scale compared to BA CityFlyer's presence.

In January 2025, London City Airport announced plans to potentially introduce Airbus A320neo flights pending approval by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport stated: “The potential introduction of the A320neo aircraft at London City Airport is incredibly exciting.” If approved, this could open up new opportunities for growth without increasing flight movements.
