Thousands of Lidl workers in Italy are preparing to strike on May 24, as reported by UNI Global Union and its affiliates in the commerce sector. The union has expressed solidarity with the workers, highlighting their demands for better working conditions and fair compensation.

UNI Commerce, which represents over 4 million commerce workers and 160 unions globally, has aligned itself with the striking Lidl employees and affiliated unions such as FILCAMS CGIL, FISASCAT CISL, and UILTUCS. The organization emphasized that more than 23,000 Lidl workers across Italy have voiced their dissatisfaction with current working conditions.

The grievances cited include unpredictable shifts, excessive workloads, unpaid overtime, and insufficient pay increases that do not match the rising cost of living. The workers are advocating for a fair supplementary collective agreement, decent working conditions, humane workloads, predictable scheduling, a guaranteed 25-hour workweek, and a real pay raise.

This movement in Italy follows a similar strike by Lidl workers in France who demanded improved hours and conditions. UNI Commerce asserts that this momentum will continue beyond Italy.

The union calls on Lidl and its parent company Schwarz Group to acknowledge the demands of the workers. "Lidl workers will not back down until they secure the dignity and fairness they deserve," stated UNI Commerce.

Mathias Bolton, Head of UNI Commerce, conveyed his support: "We join our Italian sisters and brothers in calling for a supplementary collective agreement and offer them our full solidarity."

Bolton assured the striking workers: "You are not alone. We walk with you. We fight with you. And we will stand by you — until you win."
