Finnair has announced the cancellation of around 110 flights on May 30 due to ongoing strikes by Finland’s aviation union. The disruption is expected to impact approximately 8,000 passengers flying from or to Helsinki. Finnair has been in contract negotiations with its employees' union and warns that further disruptions could occur in early June if no agreement is reached.

The airline plans to provide alternative travel solutions for affected passengers, which can be accessed via its website or mobile applications. Jaakko Schildt, Finnair's Chief Operating Officer, stated: "We are deeply sorry that our customers' important travel plans are once again disrupted. We are doing everything we can to provide our customers with alternative routing as quickly as possible."

The strikes by the Finnish Aviation Union (Ilmailualan Unioni, IAU) will target different work shifts and affect essential operations at Helsinki Airport, such as ground handling and maintenance. Passengers traveling on May 30 are advised to check in advance, arrive on time, and carry essential items in their hand luggage.

Data from Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool shows Finnair had scheduled 167 departures and 169 arrivals from/to Helsinki on May 30. The most frequent departures were planned for Tallinn Airport, Oulu Airport, and Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

The IAU has also announced plans for additional strikes on June 2 and June 4. The potential impact of these actions is still under assessment by Finnair.

In a statement regarding the ongoing labor dispute, the IAU highlighted salary disagreements as a core issue: “The employee side believes that due to the salary increases that were not implemented in 2021 and 2022, the contract sector has fallen behind the general policy.” A mediator proposed a settlement on May 27, but it was rejected by the union due to conditions related to company-wide wage negotiations.

Throughout May, several strikes organized by the IAU have already led Finnair to cancel a total of 410 flights on earlier dates including May 2, May 5, May 16, and May 19.
