Setna iO, a company specializing in spare parts for commercial aircraft and based in Chicago, has acquired an ex-Malaysia Airlines Airbus A380. The aircraft will be dismantled for its valuable spare parts, which are in high demand. This particular A380 is currently stored at Tarbes–Lourdes–Pyrénées Airport in France and will be scrapped at TARMAC Aerosave’s facilities.

The French company TARMAC Aerosave became well-known during the pandemic for handling many Airbus A380s across its sites in France and Spain. On June 4, Setna iO announced the purchase of this A380, which includes three out of four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.

According to ch-aviation records, all six of Malaysia Airlines’ former A380 aircraft are stored at Tarbes–Lourdes. These aircraft are now owned by Airbus Financial Services after being returned as part of an order for 20 new A330-900 aircraft by Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG). MAG had agreed to purchase ten A330-900s from Airbus and another ten from the Ireland-based lessor, Avolon.

In addition to Setna iO's activities, VAS Aero Services based in Florida was selected by Airbus to manage the teardown and redistribution of parts from three other A380s. These include airframes with manufacturer serial numbers MSN 61, 66, and 84. The first two were previously operated by Lufthansa and are stored at Teruel Airport in Spain.

MSN 84 is another ex-Malaysia Airlines aircraft that had been parked since November 2022 after being retired along with all other Malaysian A380s in 2020. Demand for parts remains strong as airlines extend their use of the superjumbo due to delays in Boeing's new widebody deliveries.

Tommy Hughes, CEO of VAS Aero Services noted that due to delays with Boeing's 777-9 until at least 2026, "there is an increasing reliance on the A380." He added there is a growing need for quality second-hand parts given the number of active or maintained A380s worldwide stands around 182 according to ch-aviation data.

The list of operators includes major airlines such as All Nippon Airways (ANA), Asiana Airlines, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Global Airlines operated by Hi Fly Malta, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Qantas Airways Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.
