John Redmond Allegiant CEO | Allegiant

When flying on a budget, comfort is often compromised. Among Allegiant Air, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier Airlines—America’s major ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs)—the competition for customer satisfaction, legroom, and seat experience is intense. Each airline uses similar fleets based on the Airbus A320 family. Understanding the differences in seat configurations and cabin layouts can help travelers find a balance between savings and comfort.

Allegiant Air was founded in 1997 with John Redmond as CEO. It positions itself as offering "affordable, accessible, spacious travel." Allegiant's fleet mainly consists of Airbus A319s and A320s, offering about 30 inches of pitch in standard seats. The airline also provides “Legroom+” seats with extra space at the front and exit rows.

Spirit Airlines was founded in 1983 and operates from multiple hubs including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Spirit emphasizes that their Big Front Seat isn’t first class but offers more comfort with up to 36 inches of pitch and 22-inch width. Spirit is noted for its onboard amenities, being the only ULCC providing WiFi for a fee.

Frontier Airlines promotes an à la carte pricing model with its slogan: “Why pay for what you don’t use?” This approach reflects in their policies where amenities like seat selection are not included in the base fare. Frontier adheres closely to the ULCC model with slimline seats prioritizing seat count over passenger space.

The comparison among these airlines shows that Allegiant tends to edge out Spirit and Frontier regarding overall cabin comfort due to roomier standard seats and premium options. However, comfort often comes at an additional cost on ULCCs.

Compared to larger budget carriers like Southwest Airlines or JetBlue, all three ULCCs fall short in cabin comfort but were not designed to compete in that area. Southwest offers more generous legroom without seat selection fees while JetBlue is recognized for spacious seats and complimentary inflight WiFi.

Travelers should consider factors such as aircraft age, cleanliness, maintenance, and cabin crew service when evaluating comfort levels on these airlines. For instance, Allegiant’s older planes may offer slightly more space but come with aging interiors compared to Spirit’s newer aircraft which feel fresher.

In conclusion, Allegiant Air narrowly leads among American ultra-low-cost carriers by offering slightly more generous standard seat pitch and practical extra-legroom options. Spirit shines if passengers opt for the Big Front Seat while Frontier focuses on keeping fares low at the expense of personal space.

For travelers seeking a touch of extra comfort without blowing their budget, knowing priorities helps: Allegiant and Spirit provide meaningful options worth considering. As new aircraft join fleets and older ones are phased out, shifts in cabin configurations may occur.
