United Airlines | Simple Flying

United Airlines, one of the major carriers in the United States, operates a varied fleet that includes both narrowbody and widebody aircraft. Among its approximately 1,000 mainline aircraft are 53 Boeing 767s, including 16 of the less common Boeing 767-400ER variant. To fly on one of these rare planes in June, passengers will need to travel through either Newark Liberty or Washington Dulles airports.

In June, United's Boeing 767-400ERs are scheduled for a total of 729 flights, offering 168,399 seats. These flights primarily depart from Newark Liberty and Washington Dulles hubs. The routes include several transatlantic destinations such as Dubrovnik in Croatia; Rome and Venice in Italy; Berlin Brandenburg in Germany; Paris-Charles de Gaulle in France; Madrid and Palma de Mallorca in Spain; Palermo in Sicily; Geneva in Switzerland; and San Juan in Puerto Rico.

The only non-European destination served by the Boeing 767-400ER from Newark Liberty is San Juan, Puerto Rico. On this route, United competes with JetBlue and Frontier airlines.

From Washington Dulles Airport, which serves Washington D.C., United holds a significant market share of about 70%. Flights from this hub include daily services to São Paulo in Brazil; Paris-Charles de Gaulle; Madrid; Lisbon; Zurich; and Honolulu.

Interestingly, United's domestic flights using the Boeing 767-400ER are among its longest and shortest scheduled routes for June. The flight from Washington Dulles to Honolulu spans an average distance of 4,817 miles—longer than any European destination—while the shortest route is between Newark Liberty and San Juan at just over 1,600 miles.

United's fleet configuration for the Boeing 767-400ER includes seating for business class (34 seats), premium economy (24 seats), and economy class (173 seats). The airline plans to phase out its aging fleets of both Boeing 767-300ERs and -400ERs by the end of this decade.

Delta Air Lines also operates a fleet of Boeing 767s but has more examples than United. Delta is gradually replacing its older models with newer Airbus widebody aircraft while continuing to operate their full complement of -400ERs alongside United.

Boeing's production focus has shifted away from passenger versions of certain models like the Boeing 767 due to newer options like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner offering better efficiency and range capabilities. The remaining orders for freighter versions are expected to be fulfilled by around mid-decade before production concludes entirely.
