American Airlines has announced an expansion of its regional fleet through a significant order placed by its subsidiary, Envoy Air. The airline, which operates under the American Eagle brand, will acquire 33 new Embraer E175 aircraft over the next two years. This move is part of Envoy Air's strategy to strengthen its position in the feeder sector of US commercial aviation.

Envoy Air President & CEO Pedro Fábregas stated: "As we remain focused on our Core Principles of Safety, Quality, and Cost Control, Envoy continues to grow strategically and sustainably, delivering value to our customers, employees, and American Airlines Group shareholders. This milestone reflects the dedication and hard work of our more than 21,000 employees across North America, the Pacific, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas."

The newly ordered Embraer E175s are set to join Envoy Air's existing fleet of 169 Embraer E-Jets. The carrier currently operates 126 E175s and 43 E170s. By the end of this year, it is expected that their fleet will increase to 181 aircraft.

The decision to focus on the E175 model aligns with US aviation regulations that limit regional airlines' aircraft to a maximum of 76 seats. Envoy Air configures its E175s with exactly this number of seats: 12 in first class and 64 in economy.

According to Cirium data for this month, Envoy Air's Embraer E175s are scheduled for over 21,000 flights for American Airlines. These flights provide more than 1.6 million seats and cover nearly 870 million available seat miles (ASMs). The routes vary significantly in length from Greenville to Charlotte at just 76 miles apart to Boise connecting with Chicago over a distance exceeding 1,400 miles.

This recent order follows previous expansions reported by Simple Flying in October 2023 when American Airlines ordered four additional E175s for Envoy Air. Further orders were made in January 2024 and December saw deliveries that marked significant milestones in Envoy's fleet modernization efforts.
