Continental Airlines Boeing 737-700 | Simple Flying

Continental Airlines, later becoming part of United Airlines, operated a distinctive transpacific route using the Boeing 737-700 between Southern California and Hawaii in the late 2000s and early 2010s. This decision showcased the potential of narrowbody aircraft for long-haul flights, particularly over oceanic stretches.

The Boeing 737-700 was equipped with Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS), allowing it to safely conduct flights from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Kahului Airport in Maui. This move highlighted several strategic considerations including airport constraints, fuel efficiency, and targeting specific passenger demographics.

"Continental Airlines made headlines in December 2009 when it announced new daily service between Orange County and Maui using the Boeing 737-700," as reported by AviationPros. The route spanned approximately 2,490 miles and typically took under six hours to complete.

The choice of aircraft was influenced by factors such as "John Wayne Airport’s strict noise and size limits due to its suburban location and short runway," which restricted widebody operations. Additionally, Continental aimed at serving "high-income Orange County residents wanting a direct flight to Hawaii without needing to travel to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)."

Operationally, the Boeing 737-700 offered lower fuel consumption and crew costs compared to larger aircraft. However, flying this model over vast oceanic areas presented unique challenges requiring meticulous planning regarding weather patterns, alternate airports, and fuel reserves exceeding typical domestic norms.

One critical aspect was meeting ETOPS certification requirements. "To legally fly over vast stretches of ocean between California and Hawaii," Continental had to ensure compliance with these standards. This involved rigorous engine reliability data collection, specialized maintenance programs, redundant systems onboard, and enhanced crew training.

Despite its smaller cabin space compared to widebodies used by competitors on similar routes, passengers valued the convenience of avoiding LAX traffic while enjoying direct flights from Orange County. The legacy continued when United Airlines revived this concept in May 2021 with a nonstop route between Orange County and Honolulu using the Boeing 737-800.

This innovative use of narrowbody jets has influenced modern aviation strategies where airlines are deploying newer models like the A321LR for efficient long-haul routes. While technology advances offer improved cabin interiors and profitability today, Continental's pioneering efforts demonstrated that even small jets could undertake significant journeys across large oceans under suitable conditions.
