American Airlines has temporarily suspended its flights to Doha, Qatar, due to rising tensions in the Middle East. The airline cites safety and security concerns as the reason for this decision. The US Embassy in Doha has also issued a warning to US citizens in Qatar, advising them to be vigilant.

Over the past week, hundreds of flights in and out of the Middle East have been canceled amid missile strikes between Israel and Iran. Although countries like Qatar and the UAE are not directly involved in these conflicts, their airports have been affected.

American Airlines' Flight AA120 from Philadelphia International Airport to Doha Hamad International Airport will remain suspended until June 22 while the situation is assessed. Flights on June 18, 19, and 20 were already canceled according to Flightradar24 data.

The flight route usually operates daily with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and connects passengers to Qatar Airways’ network through their strategic partnership within the oneworld alliance. Despite American Airlines' suspension, Qatar Airways continues its operations to several US destinations including New York, Boston, Miami, and Dallas as of June 19.

"American Airlines has made adjustments to its Doha, Qatar (DOH) operation," said American Airlines in a statement. "We will continue to monitor the situation with safety and security top of mind and will adjust our operation further as needed."

The US Embassy's advisory urges citizens to stay cautious at locations associated with the US and maintain a low profile. They recommend contacting airlines for flight changes if necessary.

Flight schedules from the US have been significantly disrupted by these conflicts. According to Cirium data, there are up to 358 weekly scheduled passenger flights from the US to the Middle East this month across various airlines including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.

United Airlines has canceled flights from Newark to Dubai following recent instability. Last month saw both United and Delta pausing Tel Aviv flights after a Houthi missile strike on Ben Gurion Airport; however, those flights resumed before being canceled again due to ongoing tensions. Other airlines such as Emirates, Etihad, El Al, Saudia also operate routes between the US and Middle East.

The region has experienced periodic disruptions over two years due largely because of recurring conflicts which most recently include missile exchanges between Israel-Iran leading cancellations exceeding 500 affecting major airports like Tel Aviv-Dubai-Amman-Istanbul-Beirut among others.
