India's aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth, marked by record-breaking domestic travel and the emergence of new carriers. Amidst this expansion, safety remains a key concern for travelers. AirlineRatings.com provides a 7-star safety rating system to assess airlines' risk levels.

The current ratings for major Indian airlines are as follows: IndiGo has a 6/7 rating, SpiceJet scores a perfect 7/7, Akasa Air also receives 6/7, while Air India is rated at 4/7. Air India Express has a lower score of 2/7 due to past incidents.

AirlineRatings.com's system evaluates three main areas: pilot-related safety incidents, fatal accidents in the last decade, and international safety audits. Airlines earn stars based on their performance in these categories. Notably, fatal accidents remove stars from an airline's rating for up to ten years.

Recent improvements in India's ICAO country safety audit have positively impacted the ratings of all Indian airlines. However, historical inconsistencies in regulatory oversight have affected their scores over time.

Air India Express experienced a tragic runway incident in Kozhikode in 2020 that resulted in the loss of lives and contributed to its low safety score. IndiGo has had operational incidents but maintains a high rating due to effective management responses.

SpiceJet and Akasa Air maintain strong records partly due to their smaller fleet sizes. SpiceJet holds a full 7-star rating, while Akasa scores slightly lower due to lacking IOSA certification.

Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com, stated: "While we can never predict the future, our safety ratings are a reliable source of information to help guide the public toward the safest option for their journey."

India's aviation sector continues its impressive growth trajectory; however, recent events highlight the ongoing need for vigilance regarding passenger safety.
