Claudia Batten Independent Non-Executive Director (Appointed 28 October 2021) | Air New Zealand

The strategic partnership between Air New Zealand, Air China, and Tourism New Zealand aims to enhance Chinese tourism to New Zealand with a combined investment of nearly half a million NZD. This investment supplements existing efforts by Air New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand to boost inbound tourism from China.

Over the coming year, Air New Zealand plans to invest over $700,000 in marketing through strategic partnerships, augmenting its ongoing marketing initiatives in China. The funding will support a campaign promoting New Zealand as an attractive destination for Chinese travelers and highlight the alliance between Air New Zealand and Air China established in 2015. This partnership has improved connectivity and convenience for travelers between the two countries.

China is currently New Zealand's third-largest source of international visitors, accounting for about 8% of total arrivals. In the year leading up to March 2025, 248,000 Chinese tourists visited New Zealand, marking an 18% increase from the previous year.

Greg Foran, CEO of Air New Zealand, noted the strengthening service between Shanghai and Auckland. "China is an incredibly important market for us," he said. "This joint investment is an opportunity to further stimulate travel demand."

Air China's Chairman Ma Chongxian expressed optimism about the market recovery and alliance with Air New Zealand. He emphasized the importance of their partnership in promoting economic growth and cross-cultural communication.

Tourism New Zealand's Chief Executive René de Monchy highlighted that around 60 million people in China are considering a holiday in New Zealand. He noted that Chinese visitors are attracted to New Zealand's culture and natural beauty.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon commented on the significance of this partnership: "This strategic investment will not only boost awareness of Aotearoa as a unique and welcoming destination but also deepen connections between our peoples and cultures."

The initiative underscores a commitment from both airlines and New Zealand's tourism sector to support economic recovery and strengthen ties between China and New Zealand.
