American Express Membership Rewards will cease transfers to HawaiianMiles on June 30. This change impacts those wishing to transfer points to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, a valuable yet challenging airline loyalty currency.

Since last year, HawaiianMiles have been transferable to Mileage Plan, providing Amex cardholders an indirect way to move their Membership Rewards points to Alaska Airlines. This option became available after Alaska Airlines acquired Hawaiian Airlines.

The announcement was made on the American Express website and mobile app. "While we don't usually recommend speculative transfers from a credit card points program to a particular airline or hotel partner, this could be an exception for Alaska Airlines and Oneworld fans," stated American Express. The Mileage Plan offers competitive award rates on short-haul domestic flights and transatlantic business-class flights from the East Coast.

For instance, an economy flight under 700 miles with American Airlines may require only 4,500 Alaska miles. A transatlantic business-class flight between 1,501 and 3,500 miles starts at just 45,000 miles on partner airlines like Aer Lingus. These rates are often lower than other Oneworld loyalty programs such as American Airlines AAdvantage.

To transfer Membership Rewards points to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan involves two steps: first transferring them to HawaiianMiles via the "Rewards & Benefits" page of your Amex account. You can transfer up to 999,000 points per day; these typically process instantly but may take up to two days according to Amex.

If you plan this transfer before June 30, note that there's an excise tax offset fee of 0.06 cents per mile, capped at $99 per transfer. This fee can be charged to an Amex card or covered with Membership Rewards points; however, redeeming points for this purpose is not recommended due to low value return.

Once transferred to HawaiianMiles, use the airline's tool for moving points between Hawaiian and Alaska accounts—usually processed instantly.

As of now, Bilt Points also transfer into the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan offering another avenue for earning miles with a transferable point card post-June 30 deadline.

Those planning travel with Alaska or its partners soon might consider transferring some Membership Rewards points before time runs out since Alaska miles hold significant value due largely in part because of low award prices coupled with extensive nonalliance partnerships though it sacrifices flexibility potentially leaving your accumulated miles vulnerable if not redeemed promptly.
