SAS has announced its return to India after a 17-year hiatus, marking a significant development in the airline's network. The Scandinavian carrier will commence flights from Copenhagen to Mumbai next year, a route that has never been served before. This move comes as part of SAS's transition to the SkyTeam alliance, which includes members like Virgin Atlantic focusing on India and connectivity with North America.

The inaugural flight from Copenhagen to Mumbai is scheduled for June 2, 2026. SAS plans to operate this route five times weekly using an Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The choice of Mumbai over Delhi may be influenced by current airspace restrictions and existing services by Air India on the Delhi-Copenhagen route.

IndiGo has also expressed interest in flying to Copenhagen, although it remains unclear if these flights will originate from Mumbai. IndiGo's strategic partnerships with Delta, Air France-KLM, and Virgin Atlantic could potentially lead to future collaborations with SAS.

Despite Bengaluru being Copenhagen's largest unserved Indian city based on booking data, SAS has opted for Mumbai due to its unserved status and potential for increased point-to-point traffic. The new service is expected to rely heavily on transit traffic due to its frequency and capacity.

SAS's Asian operations have seen a significant reduction in recent years due to geopolitical issues and recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. In 2025, SAS plans limited services in Asia with routes including Bangkok, Seoul Incheon, and Tokyo Haneda from Copenhagen.
