Daniel Cuchet as Senior Vice President Engineering at ATR | ATR Website

Pratt & Whitney Canada and ATR are collaborating to explore a mild hybrid version of the PW127XT engine for ATR's upcoming Evo turboprop, scheduled for release in 2035. This partnership aims to enhance the regional aircraft's efficiency by contributing up to 10% 2MW peak output, aiding the thermal engine during takeoff and climb phases.

ATR is focusing on a hybrid architecture that integrates an improved 200kW electrical motor with a reduction gearbox. This setup could optimize the engine with a lower power rating, boosting aircraft efficiency. At the Paris Air Show, more details about this project were shared, highlighting a goal for at least a 20% reduction in overall fuel burn.

The plan includes adapting existing technology and conducting comprehensive studies between Pratt & Whitney Canada and ATR. Daniel Cuchet, ATR's senior vice-president of engineering, stated: "(This is) The development of advanced propulsion technology for regional turboprop aircraft. All this we do as a complete package for feeding the Evo, and this is what we are studying today with Pratt and also internally to ATR."

ATR is also part of the HE-ART project with Rolls-Royce under Clean Aviation, although it remains uncertain if their collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada will extend into Clean Aviation's second phase. Additionally, Pratt & Whitney Canada is working on a Canadian Government-funded project to hybridize the De Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 alongside Collins Aerospace.

The ATR EVO concept aims to introduce innovative technologies that improve operational costs while focusing on sustainability, affordability, and versatility. Benefits include hybrid capabilities, 100% SAF compatibility, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 20%, and lower maintenance costs compared to current engines.

These advancements combine thermal engines with battery-powered motors to optimize core size through electrical power and enhance overall efficiency. The EVO concept strives for responsible air travel by using new bio-sourced materials that improve sustainability.

As a leader in regional aviation with over 1,200 aircraft operating globally across 90 countries, ATR continues its commitment to sustainable practices through its exploration of the EVO concept.
