First class air travel in the United States has seen a decline, yet it remains significant for premium domestic markets. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines continue to offer first-class products on most domestic routes. However, these carriers have scaled back first class on international flights.

Currently, only American Airlines offers an international first class product. Delta and United have replaced theirs with Delta One and United Polaris. Despite fewer amenities than international flights, domestic first class provides a comfortable travel experience within the US.

American Airlines presents two domestic first-class options: 'First' and 'Flagship First.' The standard First is prevalent across its network, while Flagship First is limited to select transcontinental routes on the Airbus A321T and some Boeing 777-300ERs. Its narrowbody fleet features a variety of seating configurations.

Delta Air Lines' Delta First is noted for its standout base product among major US airlines. Its narrowbody fleet includes seatback in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens and free Wi-Fi access on most aircraft. Food service varies by flight length, with meals offered on longer routes.

United Airlines phased out long-haul first class nearly a decade ago in favor of United Polaris business cabins. Domestically, United First spans its network and some short regional international flights. Although not all cabins feature IFE screens, the airline is installing them fleet-wide.

While each carrier's domestic first-class offerings vary slightly, common perks include expedited airport services and priority boarding. Seat quality improves over economy with enhanced pitch and width. Meal services are generally available except on shorter routes.

Despite these amenities, none of the three airlines provide lounge access for domestic first passengers unless traveling certain premium routes or holding specific memberships or statuses.

Excluding Flagship First from consideration, Delta appears to lead due to complimentary WiFi and extensive IFE screen availability. Reviewers often commend Delta for service quality and reliability. Operationally, Delta was recognized as the most punctual US airline in 2024.

"Delta would probably come out on top with its complimentary WiFi," reflecting broader sentiment among flight reviewers who praise "Delta First...for its quality of service."

The Wall Street Journal highlighted Delta's consistent ranking as the best US airline over recent years.
