Vietnamese low-cost airline Vietjet has placed a significant order for 100 Airbus A321neo aircraft at the 2025 Le Bourget Paris Airshow, with an option to purchase an additional 50 planes in the future. This deal underscores the growing economic ties between Vietnam, France, and Europe, while marking a key step in Vietjet’s evolution into a multinational aviation group.

The new order comes after last month's decision to acquire 20 more Airbus A330-900neo widebody aircraft, doubling Vietjet's total A330neo orders to 40 planes. These investments are expected to significantly enhance Vietjet's capacity on major Asia-Pacific routes and facilitate new long-haul services to Europe.

Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao emphasized that these orders represent more than just commercial agreements: “I have a vision and the determination to make Vietnam a regional aviation hub for passenger transportation, technical services, logistics, training, research, global supply chains, and aviation infrastructure. We will continue to develop a robust and modern fleet to support that goal. The agreement with Airbus is a significant milestone that marks the beginning of Vietjet’s new journey: a journey of global expansion, new growth drivers, enhanced connectivity, and the development of a sustainable aviation ecosystem powered by ambition and transformation.”

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry from Airbus commented on the partnership: “Together the A321neo and A330neo will be perfect partners for Vietjet to continue to spread its wings, efficiently matching capacity more closely to demand across its network. The airline will also benefit from the high levels of technical commonality unique to latest generation Airbus aircraft.”

The A321neo is known for its range and efficiency as part of Airbus’s A320neo Family. It features advanced engines and Sharklets which contribute to noise reduction by 50% and fuel savings exceeding 20% compared to previous models. The aircraft also supports up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) use currently with plans for full SAF capability by 2030.

According to Vietjet’s ESG Sustainability Report from 2024, it ranks among airlines with low CO₂ emissions per passenger. Operating over 120 fuel-efficient aircraft currently with more than 400 on order through its strategic partnership with Airbus aids in expanding its global reach.

Vietjet’s recent fleet expansion efforts aim at challenging existing low-cost long-haul competitors like Scoot and AirAsia X. With an all-Airbus fleet of 115 aircraft including recent orders totaling over hundreds of planes across different models such as the A320neo Family alongside A330neos—Vietjet leverages scale efficiencies against rising regional demands.

As environmental concerns become increasingly prominent within aviation sectors globally—the alignment between market expectations towards greener travel options sees both models (A330neo & A321neo) fitting well within sustainability goals held by carriers like VietJet aiming towards eco-friendly advancements via Rolls-Royce Trent-powered engines certified under SAF regulations targeting complete capabilities set forth before decade end (2030).
