Reykjanes Peninsula, located along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is known for its significant volcanic activity. This region in Iceland is a hub of geothermal energy with hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and unique geological sites. Its diverse landscape includes moss-covered lava fields, coastal cliffs with lighthouses, and colorful rock formations.

The peninsula is about 50 kilometers from Reykjavík and hosts the international airport at Keflavík. It serves as an ideal starting or ending point for visitors touring Iceland. The area can be explored via a loop drive that showcases its geological attractions.

Eruptions in Reykjanes are typically fissure eruptions where basaltic lava flows from ground cracks. While recent eruption sites are restricted for safety reasons, visitors can still explore new formations from Fagradalsfjall eruptions between 2021 and July 2023. The Eldey island is another notable feature formed by a nearby underwater volcanic system.

Safety protocols are in place to monitor volcanic activity on the peninsula. Visitors are advised to check updates on volcano activity and road conditions before traveling.

Reykjanes Geopark spans most of the peninsula and includes 55 geosites featuring crater formations, geothermal features like hot springs and steam vents, as well as historic sites such as shipwrecks. UNESCO describes geoparks as areas managed with a focus on protection, education, and sustainable development.

Visitors can plan their itinerary based on available time: under a day allows for a short loop visiting Kleifarvatn, Seltún, Brimketill, and Reykjanestá; around a day includes additional landmarks like the Bridge Between Continents; more than a day offers extended exploration combined with visits to places like the Blue Lagoon.

For those flying through Keflavík Airport or planning an Iceland tour stopover, exploring Reykjanes is convenient with regular flights from the US offering options for car hire and tours.
