Eurofighter Typhoon | Wikipedia

The United Kingdom has chosen not to order the latest version of the Eurofighter Typhoon, known as the T5 Tranche. This decision marks a significant shift for British Aerospace (BAE) Systems and labor union representatives, who warn that closing the production plant could signal the end of an industry.

According to CBN, only one jet remains in the shop awaiting final touches, indicating no further work for skilled technicians who have been assembling these fourth-generation fighters for decades.

The Eurofighter Typhoon seems to be losing favor to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II or Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The F-35 program is multinational but primarily based in the US. Its stealth capabilities and ability to carry nuclear weapons offer upgrades that fill gaps in the Royal Air Force's (RAF) arsenal since the 1990s.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham expressed concerns reported by Lancashire Post: “Workers at BAE and across the whole UK defence and manufacturing industry will be looking at the ending of the Typhoon final assembly production at Warton and asking how a government promising to turn defence spending into ‘British growth, British jobs, British skills, British innovation’ could let it happen…A failure to do this could destroy a generation of aerospace workers and would amount to an act of national self-harm."

As reported by Jane’s in April, nearly all RAF Tranche 1 jets have been retired. The Ministry of Defense (MOD) recently ordered more F-35 fighters instead of replacing retiring Eurofighters with new models. BAE hoped export orders might sustain operations until GCAP production begins, but no such orders have materialized.

The Typhoon was developed with Germany, Italy, and Spain as a fighter focused on interception and air superiority. Over time it evolved into a multirole fighter still used by several air forces globally. However, this does not suffice to keep BAE's Warton plant operational.

Despite ongoing aircraft orders from Germany’s Luftwaffe and others like Spain, Italy, Kuwait, and Qatar for various Tranche models, there isn't enough work across final assembly lines in Europe. Each partner nation performs its own final assembly under original program designs with parts supplied by companies like BAE and Leonardo Airbus Defense.

Germany placed new orders last year while Spain and Italy opted for Tranche 4 models. Yet among production partners opting out first appears RAF leaving few options open at Warton Plant according UK Defence Journal reporting suggestions MOD bridging gap between end-Typhoon-start-GCAP
