JFK Airport and LaGuardia Airport are two major airports serving the New York City metropolitan area, alongside Newark Airport in New Jersey. Both JFK and LaGuardia are known for frequent delays due to congested airspace and adverse weather conditions.

According to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), 78% of flights departed on time from JFK in 2024, with 22% experiencing delays. Arrival delays were slightly higher at 23%. This marks an improvement from previous years, where delay rates were higher. Flight cancellations at JFK also decreased to 1.86% in 2024.

LaGuardia reported better punctuality, with 80% of departing flights and 78% of arriving flights on time in 2024. However, it had a higher cancellation rate of 2.35%. The average delay for departures was longer at LaGuardia compared to JFK.

Stephen Abraham, a former JFK air traffic controller, noted that newer airports have better designs for handling traffic efficiently. Both JFK and LaGuardia face challenges due to their older infrastructure and limited capacity for expansion.

Newark Liberty International Airport also faces similar issues with congestion and delays. In 2024, only 76% of its flights were on time, with a cancellation rate of 2.52%.

The complexity of New York's airspace adds to the problem, as it covers over 30 airports including some of the busiest in the country. Staffing shortages among air traffic controllers further exacerbate delays.

Despite efforts to upgrade equipment and address staffing issues, challenges remain due to inefficient airport designs and unpredictable weather conditions.
