With economic uncertainty affecting the United States, the leisure travel market has seen a contraction in recent months. However, premium travel segments have remained stable. Delta Air Lines reported a 5% year-on-year decline in main cabin revenues for Q2, while premium products saw a 5% increase.

As Florida becomes more expensive for vacations, Mexico is emerging as an alternative destination for U.S. travelers. Simple Flying reports on how U.S. airlines are increasing flights to Mexico, particularly during winter.

United Airlines announced a new route from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Tepic International Airport in Nayarit, starting December with an Embraer E175 aircraft. Miguel Ángel Navarro, Governor of Nayarit, emphasized the importance of this route for the state.

American Airlines is also expanding its services to Mexico with new routes from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to Mexico City and Queretaro International Airport starting in October and December respectively. The airline plans to increase weekly flights from Chicago-O'Hare to various Mexican destinations by 15 in December compared to last year.

United Airlines is adding several new routes to Mexico and increasing frequencies on existing ones. In December, eight U.S.-based carriers have scheduled flights from the U.S. to Mexico, with American Airlines leading with additional weekly frequencies.

Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines are also increasing their schedules to Mexico. Alaska will add daily flights from Los Angeles to Monterrey and La Paz starting February 2025. Southwest will add frequencies on three routes but cut four direct routes in December.

Frontier Airlines plans to eliminate several routes from Denver and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Cancun and other Mexican destinations. Sun Country Airlines will reduce its service from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport.

JetBlue is adjusting its schedule by removing some departures but adding others from Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport to Cancun.

Delta Air Lines will make significant cuts in its schedule for flights to Mexico, including removing the Los Angeles-Mexico City route temporarily until April 2026. Glen Hauenstein, President of Delta Air Lines, noted mixed demand for travel to Mexico.
