When traveling on a budget, legacy airlines in the United States offer Basic Economy fares. These fares provide the usual perks of economy class but come with restrictions such as no seat assignment, limited changes, and no refunds or checked bags.

Passengers with basic economy tickets are the last to board and can only bring a small personal item that fits under the seat. While cheaper than standard economy tickets, these fares have additional restrictions. Basic economy suits travelers who prioritize cost over comfort and have firm travel plans without needing extras like checked baggage or flexible flight changes.

Basic economy is available on all domestic services and some international itineraries. For instance, flights between the United States and Europe allow passengers to carry a full-size carry-on bag. Despite being among the cheapest seats, basic economy tickets come with several restrictions. Travelers usually board last, cannot select seats in advance, and are limited to one personal item stowed under the seat.

Travelers with airline status may enjoy some exemptions from these restrictions. For example, MileagePlus members can bring one carry-on bag for free. However, loyalty benefits vary across US legacy carriers.

United Airlines offers Basic Economy as its cheapest fare type with certain restrictions. Passengers receive food and entertainment but are limited to one personal item that fits under the seat. Carry-on bags are free only on specific routes like South America or across the Atlantic.

Delta Air Lines' basic economy class, known as Delta Main Basic, offers low fares but comes with limited flexibility. Passengers earn no mileage and cannot select seats until check-in. Complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are provided onboard.

American Airlines' Basic Economy is their lowest fare type, offering standard economy seats with free snacks and entertainment. Passengers can cancel or amend their itinerary within 24 hours of purchase at no charge.

Basic economy fares cater to budget-conscious travelers willing to forego frills for lower ticket prices while still enjoying onboard benefits like snacks and entertainment.
