In July 2025, the United States will see a total of 13,907 flights averaging 109 miles or fewer. These flights, carrying approximately 1.2 million seats, are operated by various US-based airlines and do not include regional bush flights. Notably, Alaska Airlines operates both some of the longest and shortest domestic routes in the country.

Alaska Airlines operates two of the shortest scheduled routes in July 2025. The shortest route is from Petersburg Airport to Wrangell Airport in Alaska's Panhandle. This service is part of the Essential Air Service program due to the lack of road access to these islands. The airline uses Boeing 737-700 aircraft for this daily flight, with a total of 31 flights scheduled in July offering 3,844 seats.

The second-shortest route connects Juneau to Gustavus Airport, also inaccessible by road. This route is served daily using Boeing 737-700s from Alaska Airlines' fleet of 245 Boeing 737 family aircraft.

For routes under 70 miles, there are two notable ones: Chicago O'Hare to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport and San Juan (Puerto Rico) to Cyril E. King Airport (US Virgin Islands). The Chicago-Milwaukee route is served by Alaska Airlines and United Airlines using Bombardier CRJ regional jets and Embraer E-Jets. Meanwhile, JetBlue primarily serves the San Juan-US Virgin Islands route with Airbus A320s.

Between 70 and 75 miles, JetBlue flies from Boston Logan to Martha's Vineyard using Embraer 190 aircraft daily. United and Southwest serve Denver to Colorado Springs with multiple flights using regional and narrowbody aircraft.

Other notable short-haul flights include American Airlines' Charlotte Douglas to Greenville–Spartanburg route at 76 miles and Delta's Minneapolis–Saint Paul to Rochester route at the same distance.

Short-haul flights are common across water barriers such as Hawaiian islands or Alaskan regions without road access. However, some short routes exist despite well-developed road infrastructure like Denver to Colorado Springs.

Alaska Airlines has been highlighted for operating both long average domestic flights at an average distance of 934 miles while also managing ultra-short routes within Alaska.
