Avelo Airlines has announced its decision to cease operations at its West Coast base in California by the end of the year. This marks a significant shift for the budget airline, which began its first flight from Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) four years ago. The airline cites market competition as a key factor behind this move.

The withdrawal will see Avelo focusing more on its East Coast operations, where it already has a stronger presence. The company plans to leverage this established market to improve its financial standing after experiencing challenging months.

CEO Andrew Levy commented on the closure, stating, "Our company's deepest operational roots are in Burbank," and acknowledged that it was "not an easy decision." Avelo aims to redeploy aircraft from Burbank to areas with better growth prospects and expand its East Coast operations.

Starting next month, Avelo will reduce its presence in Burbank to one based aircraft before completely withdrawing by December. Several routes have already been cut, including flights from Burbank to Sonoma County and Salem. Other affected routes include those from Sonoma County Airport to Kalispell, Las Vegas, and Redmond.

Employees impacted by these changes may transfer to other bases, while passengers with affected bookings can receive refunds. On the East Coast, Avelo's network serves over 40 destinations, including foreign routes to Mexico and the Caribbean. Recent developments include launching late-night flights from New Haven, Connecticut.

Avelo Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier founded in 2018 with hubs across various U.S. locations including Hollywood Burbank Airport and Tweed New Haven Airport.
