On September 22, 2012, Boeing marked a significant milestone by delivering the first 787-8 to United Airlines. This delivery was notable as it was the first-ever for a North American and United States-based carrier. Since then, Boeing has delivered 65 of these aircraft to North American airlines including Air Canada, Aeromexico, American Airlines, and United Airlines.

Ray Conner, who was the President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes at the time, highlighted the significance of this delivery in strengthening an over 80-year partnership with United Airlines. "United now begins a new chapter with the 787 Dreamliner," Conner said. Jeff Smisek, then CEO of United Airlines, expressed excitement about introducing this advanced aircraft to their fleet: “As we continue to build the world's leading airline, we are excited for our customers and co-workers to experience this game-changing aircraft,” he added.

Initially used on domestic routes by United Airlines before transitioning internationally in late 2012, five more 787-8s were added to its fleet by year's end. However, in January 2013, all units faced grounding due to battery fire concerns as directed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The directive required modifications such as installing battery enclosures and replacing power unit batteries.

Aeromexico received its first two units in October 2013 after resolving these issues. Meanwhile, American Airlines emerged as a major operator of the model with a fleet count reaching 37 aircraft. In July alone, American Airlines scheduled numerous weekly departures from various US hubs using their extensive network.

Aeromexico also operates several one-stop services via Monterrey International Airport on select international routes while Air Canada utilizes its eight Dreamliners primarily between Canadian cities and international destinations like Europe or Asia.

Overall operations reflect diverse usage patterns across these airlines showcasing both domestic connectivity enhancements alongside expanding global reach facilitated through advanced aviation technology offered by Boeing's smallest Dreamliner variant.
