U.S. airports are experiencing significant disruptions due to a series of thunderstorms, resulting in the cancellation of over 5,200 flights since Saturday. Monday was particularly challenging as storms affected the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions, causing major delays at key airports such as LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International.

AccuWeather's senior meteorologist Adam Douty warned that flight cancellations might continue throughout the week, with Thursday and Sunday expected to be notably disruptive. The Federal Aviation Administration has also cautioned travelers about potential issues at ten major East Coast airports.

The stormy weather has led to passengers being stranded both in terminals and on planes due to traffic jams on taxiways and lightning forcing ground crews to seek shelter. Travelers are advised to fly in the morning when possible, as early flights are less likely to be delayed or canceled.

Airlines may offer itinerary changes during severe weather conditions, allowing travelers some flexibility. If a flight is canceled or significantly delayed, passengers are entitled to refunds under U.S. Department of Transportation policy if they choose not to travel.

For those dealing with travel disruptions, using airline mobile apps for itinerary changes can be more efficient than waiting on hold or standing in line. Additionally, while airlines may not cover costs related to weather-related disruptions, having a credit card with travel insurance could provide some financial protection.
