Delta Air Lines Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner | Official Website

Delta Air Lines is reportedly nearing a decision to place an order for Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners. According to sources from One Mile At A Time and JonNYC, the Atlanta-based airline may announce this deal by late 2025 or early 2026.

These reports surface as Delta aims to update its long-haul fleet and phase out its older Boeing 767-300ERs as part of a broader strategy for widebody aircraft. Simple Flying has reached out to Delta Air Lines for comments on these developments.

During its Q4 2023 earnings call, Delta's leadership confirmed plans to retire the Boeing 767-300ER fleet by 2030, with international long-haul services winding down by 2028. Currently, Delta relies mainly on its Airbus widebody fleet, which includes various models such as the Airbus A350-900s and A330 variants.

In January 2024, Delta placed an order for 20 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft with options for more. Deliveries are expected to start in 2026. However, JonNYC mentioned that deliveries of the A350-1000 will not begin until early 2027.

Aviation insider JonNYC suggests that Delta might order Boeing 787-10s by late next year or early in the following year. Tim Dunn from One Mile At A Time also noted similar expectations about a potential Boeing order. Dunn stated that "it was never realistic that DL would have a 100% Airbus widebody fleet."

The Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner could be suitable for medium-haul routes with high passenger volumes within Delta's network. The model offers less range than the popular 787-9 but can accommodate up to 336 passengers in a two-class configuration.

Currently, there are about 118 Boeing 787-10s actively flying with airlines like All Nippon Airways (ANA), British Airways, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, Saudia, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines.
