Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-1000 | Official Website

Looking at the fleets of the United States' major legacy carriers, one aircraft is notably absent: the Airbus A350-1000. However, this situation is expected to change soon. Delta Air Lines, headquartered at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), currently operates the Airbus A350 family, specifically the A350-900 model.

Both Delta and United Airlines are interested in the A350 family. Delta already operates the A350-900 and will become North America's first operator of the A350-1000 with deliveries anticipated in 2026. United has an order for 45 examples of the type from Airbus.

The A350-1000 is a longer version of the A350-900, allowing it to carry about 40 more passengers on average. This increased capacity makes it attractive for airlines operating high-demand routes. The aircraft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, providing up to 97,000 pounds of thrust.

Globally, airlines like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qatar Airways use the A350-1000 on popular routes from their hubs to major international destinations.

Delta Air Lines will be North America's first carrier to operate the Airbus A350-1000 next year as part of its sustainability goals and efforts to improve returns on key international routes. The airline announced its order for 20 fuel-efficient aircraft in January last year with options for 20 more.

Delta's CEO Ed Bastian described introducing the A350-1000 as an "important step forward for our international expansion," offering more premium seats and expanded cargo opportunities.

American Airlines remains committed to an all-Boeing widebody fleet while still maintaining significant orders with Airbus for narrow-body aircraft like the A321neo and A321XLR. United Airlines' widebody fleet consists entirely of Boeing aircraft but has plans for future integration of both Boeing and Airbus models.

Airlines generally prefer the A350-900 due to its range capabilities which suit various route demands better than those offered by larger variants like the -1000 model.
