The Airbus A350-1000, the largest variant of the Airbus A350 series, is known for its substantial size and passenger capacity. It measures 243 feet in length and can accommodate more passengers than its counterpart, the A350-900. However, this increase in size also results in a higher fuel consumption rate for the aircraft as a whole.

Operating costs for an A350-1000 range from $8,500 to $9,500 per flight hour, with fuel being a significant component of these expenses. The aircraft burns approximately 6.9 metric tons of fuel per hour, translating to about 1,822.8 gallons of aviation fuel. At cruising speeds of 561 mph, this yields an overall miles per gallon (mpg) rate of 0.308 for the entire aircraft.

Passenger seating configurations affect individual mpg calculations. With maximum seating at 480 passengers or a typical three-class arrangement accommodating between 375 and 400 seats, each passenger's mpg ranges from around 115.5 to 147.8 depending on the configuration.

Airbus emphasizes that efficiency varies under different conditions such as altitude and wind conditions. Higher altitudes typically result in lower fuel burn due to reduced drag but can have environmental impacts due to emissions like contrails that contribute to global warming.

Comparatively speaking, newer aircraft tend to be more efficient due to advancements in technology and materials used in construction. For instance, while older models like the Boeing 737-800 offer an mpg per seat of 85, newer models like the Boeing 737 MAX 8 achieve up to 103.2 mpg per seat.

Airbus is actively exploring sustainable aviation options through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Since testing began in Toulouse with Rolls-Royce engines capable of utilizing SAF effectively, Airbus has made strides toward reducing carbon footprints by incorporating SAF into their operations despite current market limitations.

"SAF is a vital part of Airbus' ambition to decarbonise the aviation industry," says Steven Le Moing from Airbus New Energy Programme Manager.

However, challenges remain regarding widespread adoption due primarily to cost factors; currently SAF remains significantly more expensive than traditional kerosene fuels making large-scale implementation challenging without legislative intervention or reduction in production costs.
