Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 | Official Website

A Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport on July 18, 2025. The aircraft reported an engine fire soon after departure, prompting a return to the airport. Fortunately, the plane landed safely without any injuries.

Delta Air Lines continues to rely on the Boeing 767, despite its age. This aircraft type remains significant for Delta and other airlines like United Airlines. As competition among legacy carriers intensifies in the US, Los Angeles is a key market.

Flight DL446 left Los Angeles at approximately 13:51 local time but encountered an engine fire immediately after takeoff. The crew of the Boeing 767-400ER reported the issue and returned to land on Runway 25L. Observers on the ground noted a small fire in the left-hand engine. The aircraft leveled off at 3,000 feet before returning to Los Angeles and landed about 15 minutes after departure.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commented: "Delta Air Lines Flight 446 safely landed after returning to Los Angeles International Airport around 2:10 p.m. local time on Friday, July 18 due to a reported engine fire. The Boeing 767-400 was heading to Hartsfield/Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The FAA will investigate."

Despite newer aircraft entering service globally, Delta remains one of the largest operators of the Boeing 767-400ER with plans potentially involving future orders for more modern jets like the Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

According to U.S. Department of Transportation Statistics, Delta leads in passenger numbers at Los Angeles International Airport with a market share of approximately 21%. Recent expansions include new routes and facilities as part of its strategy in Southern California.
