In a development linked to the ongoing trade dispute, the Trump administration is considering ending the 22-year partnership between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico. This move is in response to Mexico's reluctance to comply with U.S. demands in the current trade conflict.

The situation arose after Mexico imposed restrictions on air traffic into Mexico City during President Biden's term. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has criticized these restrictions, which he attributes to decisions made by the former U.S. administration.

The Trump administration's argument centers around foreign carriers being redirected to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) instead of Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), which is closer to Mexico City's center. They argue that this change violates existing trade agreements and gives domestic airlines an unfair advantage.

As a result, the U.S. government is demanding a review of all flights from Mexico to the United States by the Department of Transportation. This requirement could impact travel plans for approximately 40 million American travelers.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, speaking to ABC News, blamed previous U.S. leaders for allowing these developments: "Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg deliberately allowed Mexico to break our bilateral aviation agreement. That ends today."

The Joint Cooperation Agreement between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico includes a 20% stake for Delta in Aeromexico and offers reciprocal benefits for SkyMiles members flying with Aeromexico.

Both airlines are contesting this potential termination, as it could lead travelers from both countries to choose different airlines or destinations.

Aeromexico is part of SkyTeam Alliance, sharing terminal spaces with Delta at several Mexican airports beyond MEX.

Delta Air Lines, founded in 1929 and based in the United States, operates as a full-service carrier within the SkyTeam alliance under CEO Ed Bastian.
