Washington Dulles International Airport | Wikipedia

Plans for a major expansion at Washington Dulles International Airport have been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for review. The expansion includes new offices, retail space, and a fifth runway, which was approved by the airport board on July 16.

Washington Dulles serves as the primary international hub for the United States capital. The idea of a fifth runway dates back to the airport's planning in the 1950s and was part of the 1985 master plan. The last runway addition was completed in 2008, with both the fourth and fifth runways receiving approval simultaneously.

Currently, Washington-Dulles has four runways: three north-south and one east-west. The proposed fifth runway will be designated Runway 12R/30L and will be constructed parallel to US Route 50. This new runway aims to improve capacity during adverse weather conditions when only one east-west runway is operational.

The new runway will be approximately 10,500 feet long and equipped with Instrument Landing System (ILS) equipment and high-speed exits. A new taxiway system will connect it directly to existing infrastructure.

In addition to the new runway, Washington Dulles plans a significant expansion over 25 years that includes increased retail and office spaces. A new terminal building was approved in late 2024, along with plans for additional hotels to accommodate growing passenger numbers.

Washington Dulles handles over half a million aircraft movements annually, making additional capacity crucial for reducing congestion and improving efficiency.

However, challenges remain due to potential noise pollution concerns from nearby residential areas in Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. These communities could influence whether or not the project proceeds. Furthermore, Ronald Reagan National Airport remains preferred for domestic flights within its perimeter limits while Dulles continues as the main airport for longer domestic routes and international flights.
