American Airlines is set to reintroduce its Boeing 777-200ER aircraft for domestic flights between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) this fall. The announcement was made by the airline on Friday.

This change will allow passengers to book premium economy seats on these cross-country flights. Tickets for this service will be available from July 28, with the first flight scheduled for October 5.

The Fort Worth-based airline usually uses wide-body jets for international and Hawaii routes, making this a notable shift. Currently, American does not offer transcontinental services with twin-aisle planes from JFK, but this will change with the introduction of the three-cabin 777 in October.

The decision to use the 777 temporarily replaces the Airbus A321T, known for its four-cabin configuration including Flagship First class and lie-flat business-class pods. American Airlines is phasing out the A321T in favor of the new Airbus A321XLRs, which are expected to feature new Flagship Suites with sliding privacy doors. However, due to delays in XLR deliveries from Airbus, American has not yet received these planes.

With some A321Ts due for maintenance and reconfiguration, American plans to phase out their "T" configuration regardless of XLR availability. The Boeing 777 will fill this gap on a route that has high demand for premium seating options.

The 777-200ER offers 273 seats, including 37 lie-flat business-class pods and 24 premium economy recliners. The premium economy cabin provides travelers with more spacious seating, amenity kits, and an elevated dining experience compared to standard coach seating.

American expects to receive its first XLRs by year-end, which will also feature premium economy cabins.

In summary, while the Boeing 777-200ER is not American's newest aircraft model, it promises a comfortable journey between New York and Los Angeles — a rare domestic appearance for such large jets in their fleet.
