Andrew Levy Chief Executive Officer at Avelo Airlines | Avelo Airlines

Avelo Airlines is preparing to expand its fleet by leasing more Boeing 737 aircraft as it shifts focus to the US East Coast. The airline recently received its 22nd Boeing 737-800 and confirmed it is actively seeking additional planes to support growth in this region.

Currently, Avelo operates a fleet of 22 aircraft, including 14 Boeing 737-800s and eight Boeing 737-700s, all leased from various lessors. The company has not specified how many new jets it plans to lease or when they might join the fleet, stating that no agreements have been finalized yet.

The planned expansion comes shortly after Avelo announced cuts across its West Coast network and revealed plans to leave its Burbank base in California by December 2025. Burbank has served as the main hub for Avelo’s West Coast operations since the airline launched scheduled passenger service there in 2021.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Levy commented on the decision: “this wasn’t an easy choice,” adding that Burbank holds deep significance for the airline as the launch site of its first flight over four years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting next month, Avelo will reduce its presence at Hollywood Burbank Airport to one based aircraft before fully exiting later in the year. Several routes from Burbank have already been cut, including flights to Sonoma County and Salem.

Avelo intends to shift resources eastward, where it sees stronger market potential. The carrier currently serves more than 40 destinations from its East Coast bases, including international routes to Mexico and the Caribbean. Its network also reaches inland cities such as Chicago and Dallas.

A recent development for Avelo’s East Coast operations was the introduction of late-night flights from New Haven, Connecticut, connecting with San Juan, Puerto Rico. This move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in eastern markets.

The airline was founded in 2018 and operates as an ultra-low-cost carrier with hubs at Tweed New Haven Airport, Harry Reid International Airport, Orlando International Airport, Raleigh–Durham International Airport, Wilmington Airport, and previously Hollywood Burbank Airport.

Andrew Levy continues to lead Avelo Airlines as CEO.
