Johannes Studinger Head of UNI Media & Entertainment | UNI Global Union

UNI Global Union has congratulated Matthew D. Loeb on his re-election as International President of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) during the union’s 70th Quadrennial Convention held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Loeb, who also serves as President of UNI MEI, the media and entertainment sector of UNI Global Union, was recognized for his leadership and defense of workers’ rights both in North America and internationally. His continued leadership is seen as significant for promoting international solidarity among media and entertainment unions.

Upon being re-elected, Loeb stated, “Let’s seize this momentum, lock arms and get ready for the fights of the future.”

The convention addressed several key issues including strengthening relations between the United States and Canada, advancing worker-friendly policies at various governmental levels, reaffirming commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion, and supporting members affected by immigration enforcement actions in the United States.

Johannes Studinger, Head of UNI MEI, remarked at the convention: “Under President Loeb’s leadership, the global community of media and entertainment workers has never been stronger. We have grown our membership, built new unions, enhanced collective bargaining and raised labour standards around the world.”

Studinger also acknowledged IATSE colleagues for their contributions to UNI MEI’s international work. These efforts range from organizing and policy advocacy to collaboration on challenges such as generative AI technology in workplaces, occupational safety concerns, and gender equality initiatives.

Leadership on artificial intelligence by IATSE has influenced labor responses worldwide. In 2023, UNI MEI established a working group on generative AI that now includes unions from 40 countries. This group coordinates strategies based on contract agreements negotiated by IATSE with major US studios and streaming platforms in 2024.

Studinger further commented: “IATSE is strong. IATSE is united. You are a great union. It is an honor and a privilege to work with you. We are committed to growing solidarity among media and entertainment unions to lift rights and working conditions for all workers wherever they are.”

Other officers elected at the convention include General Secretary-Treasurer James B. Wood along with 13 International Vice Presidents, three Trustees, and a Delegate to the Canadian Labour Congress.

UNI MEI represents more than 500,000 workers through its network of 131 unions across over 60 countries involved in broadcasting, film production, television, live performance arts and related sectors.
