Delta Air Lines will soon replace its Bombardier CRJ700 regional jets with Embraer E175 aircraft on flights to Aspen, Colorado. The upgrade is part of Delta Connection service operated by SkyWest in partnership with Delta Air Lines, aiming to improve travel comfort and increase capacity for passengers visiting the Rocky Mountain resort town.

The Embraer E175 features a larger cabin, more spacious overhead bins, and increased cargo space. This change is intended to help travelers who bring skis, snowboards, and other bulky winter gear to Aspen. The new planes are also described as more modern and quieter than their predecessors, with larger windows offering better views of the Rockies.

According to Amy Martin, Delta Air Lines Vice President of Network Planning: “Aspen is one of the most iconic ski destinations in the world, and we’re making sure your travel experience matches the magic of the mountains. This aircraft change isn’t just about a new look, it’s about solving real challenges for our customers and enhancing every leg of the journey.”

United Airlines was first to introduce E175s at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), but Delta is now transitioning its Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) routes to use the Embraer jets as well.

Delta operates 143 Embraer E170 and E175 aircraft along with 174 Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900 jets in its fleet. Republic Airways and SkyWest operate the Embraer jets for Delta Connection; SkyWest also flies Bombardiers for Delta on some routes.

The switch from CRJ700s to E175s marks a significant upgrade for winter operations at Aspen. However, due to weight restrictions at high altitude during hot summer months—when air density decreases—the heavier Embraer may not be suitable year-round. If conditions require it, CRJ700s could return during summer months when performance limitations arise.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport sits at an elevation of 7,820 feet above sea level—higher than Denver International Airport—and plays a vital role in local transportation infrastructure. The airport has grown from a gravel strip serving the Aspen Institute in 1946 into a facility handling nearly 600,000 travelers annually. Its single runway measures 8,000 feet long and supports almost 100 based aircraft.

Before introducing scheduled service with the E175 at Aspen’s challenging high-altitude field, Embraer conducted testing at Gunnison–Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC). American Airlines and Delta will continue using some CRJ700s next season while United has moved entirely to Embraers on its flights into Aspen.
