Hawaiian Airlines will suspend three nonstop routes from Honolulu later this year, including its service to Boston Logan International Airport, Incheon International Airport in Seoul, and Fukuoka Airport in Japan. The cuts will take effect in November for Boston and Fukuoka, and in late November for Seoul.

The airline attributed these changes to economic factors and lower-than-expected demand on the affected routes. "It's always a difficult decision to suspend a route, especially in cities like Seoul, which we have enjoyed serving for over 14 years," said Hawaiian CEO Joe Sprague. He added that the company remains committed to its remaining services from Honolulu to Japan.

Travel data shows that visitors from Japan to Hawaii were down 54% in 2024 compared with 2019 levels. This drop is partly due to the weak yen. Similarly, arrivals from South Korea have fallen by nearly a third since 2019.

Hawaiian Airlines will continue flying from Honolulu to Tokyo's Haneda Airport and Osaka's Kansai International Airport.

On the domestic side, competition has increased on the Boston route, notably with Delta Air Lines also operating flights between Honolulu and Boston—the longest domestic U.S. flight.

In place of the suspended routes, Hawaiian plans to boost service on several other routes during peak travel periods. Between mid-December and January’s end, flights between Honolulu and Sydney will become daily. A second weekly flight between Honolulu and Papeete, Tahiti will be added starting in March.

Flights between Honolulu and West Coast cities are also increasing. The airline will operate five daily flights between Honolulu and Los Angeles during the holiday season. It will also offer four daily winter flights from Honolulu to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Alaska Airlines’ main hub.

These adjustments come as part of broader network changes following Hawaiian’s acquisition by Alaska Air Group last year. The partnership aims to link more Hawaiian flights with Alaska’s West Coast operations.

For this winter period (October through March), total departures on the Honolulu-Seattle route are expected to rise by approximately 226% compared with last year, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium: https://www.cirium.com/.

Additional changes include repainting Hawaiian’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliners with Alaska Airlines branding; those aircraft will transition away from Hawaii service toward long-haul international routes out of Seattle. Meanwhile, Hawaiian’s older Airbus A330s are slated for cabin upgrades over the next few years as they become Alaska's primary long-haul aircraft.
