An ITA Airways Airbus A330-200 has been operating for several weeks without its right-side winglet, according to recent reports and photographic evidence. The aircraft, registered as EI-EJP, continues to fly regular long-haul routes out of Rome Fiumicino Airport, including destinations such as Delhi, New York, Toronto, and Washington.

The missing winglet does not pose a safety risk. Winglets are designed to improve fuel efficiency by reducing drag but are not essential for the safe operation of the aircraft. Not all A330-200s are equipped with winglets, and their absence results only in a minor increase in fuel consumption.

"The likelihood here is that the winglet in question was damaged at some point a few weeks ago, and ITA has chosen to keep the plane in service while it waits for a replacement part. This means the A330 will be flying with a slight efficiency penalty, potentially adding hundreds or perhaps even thousands of dollars of additional cost per long-haul flight due to the slight increase in drag," reported Airways Magazine.

Airbus notes that winglets provide an efficiency improvement of 1-2%, while newer "sharklets" on other models can offer up to 4%. The decision by ITA Airways to keep the aircraft in service reflects industry practice where maintaining operational availability often takes precedence over minor efficiency losses. Grounding an aircraft until repairs can be made would likely lead to canceled flights and lost revenue.

EI-EJP is a 12-year-old widebody delivered originally to Alitalia in October 2012 before joining ITA Airways when it began operations in October 2021. The aircraft seats up to 256 passengers across business, premium economy, and economy classes. Data shows it has accumulated more than 50,000 flight hours and around 6,000 cycles.

ITA Airways was established as Alitalia's successor in 2020 and operates an all-Airbus fleet that includes both older and new-generation models. Of its original eight A330-200s inherited from Alitalia, five remain active with an average age of 14 years. The airline also operates eleven newer Airbus A330-900s—part of its ongoing fleet modernization program—and aims for next-generation jets to comprise most of its fleet by 2027.

ITA Airways is based at Rome Fiumicino Airport and is part of the SkyTeam alliance under CEO Fabio Lazzerini.
