Delta Air Lines has announced plans to launch a new nonstop route next summer to one of three southern European islands: Malta, Sardinia, or Ibiza. The airline is giving its SkyMiles loyalty members the opportunity to decide which destination will be added by voting through Delta’s mobile app from August 25 to August 29.

Currently, no U.S. airline offers direct flights between the United States and any of these three islands. Delta’s decision comes amid increasing demand for travel to less-visited destinations in southern Europe. Last summer, Delta introduced nonstop service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Catania, Sicily, reflecting this trend.

United Airlines has also expanded its offerings with routes to places such as Bilbao and Palma de Mallorca in Spain, as well as Greenland and Mongolia. These moves show that major airlines are seeking new transatlantic destinations beyond traditional cities.

Delta describes the initiative—called "Route Race"—as a way for customers to influence where the airline flies next. “The destinations where Delta flies are more than just dots on the map — they're gateways to culture, connection and possibility,” said Paul Baldoni, Delta senior vice president of network planning.

The winner of the vote will be announced within 30 days after voting closes. Delta has not yet specified which U.S. city will serve as the departure point for this new route.

Lyndsey Matthews, TPG Senior Travel Editor, commented on the options: “Personally, I'd love a direct route to Sardinia. It has all the delicious cuisine and gorgeous beaches travelers seek on the coasts of mainland Italy, but with way fewer crowds.”

Travelers interested in hotel stays using points may note that Sardinia recently welcomed W Sardinia — Poltu Quatu (a Marriott Bonvoy property), while Ibiza features a Westin (Marriott Bonvoy), and Malta offers a Hilton.

This move gives SkyMiles members an unusual chance to shape an airline’s future route map by selecting their preferred destination for a new transatlantic flight.
