Delta Air Lines is facing legal action after a passenger alleged he was physically assaulted by a flight attendant during a July 2025 flight. The complaint, drafted by personal injury firm CEO Lawyer and shared on Instagram, claims that Mohammed Shibli was slapped across the face following a disagreement with crew members. The incident has led to public discussion about in-flight conduct, passenger rights, and the training of airline staff.

The altercation reportedly began when Shibli, traveling with his wife and two children from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Fresno Yosemite International Airport, requested water for his two-year-old son but was initially denied because the beverage cart had not reached their row. Another flight attendant later provided the drink. According to accounts reported by Yahoo News and the Independent, an argument developed between Shibli and the first flight attendant after repeated questions about their drink order. Vulgar words were exchanged, Shibli stood up, and then he was allegedly slapped by the crew member.

Shibli is identified as a Palestinian Muslim, and his wife wore a Palestine shirt during the flight. While it remains unclear what specific words were exchanged or whether race or ethnicity played a direct role in the incident, another passenger reportedly heard the flight attendant say "you don’t get to call me that" after striking him.

Afterward, Shibli said he felt "helpless" and "humiliated" in front of his family as the nearly five-hour flight continued without further incident. He also reported being threatened with arrest by the same crew member during beverage service. Upon landing, law enforcement questioned the flight attendant but did not make an arrest. Delta has since suspended her pending further investigation.

The CEO Lawyer firm representing Shibli is demanding that Delta provide sensitivity training on Palestine for all employees and donate one day of its profits—estimated at $20 million—as restitution. If these terms are not met, they intend to proceed with filing a lawsuit against Delta in Atlanta.

"This is exceedingly rare in air travel and would be a shocking violation of airline protocols if proven to be true," states part of the complaint.

The case raises questions about how airlines prepare cabin crews for high-pressure situations. Flight attendants are responsible for maintaining order while ensuring safety and service standards are met—a challenging role that can lead to difficult interactions with passengers.

Delta has previously faced controversy regarding issues related to Palestine. In 2024, Delta deleted an X post reply referring to Palestinian flag pins as "Hamas badges," which led to accusations of anti-Palestinian bias.

Airlines generally seek to avoid association with contentious political issues such as those surrounding Gaza due to potential reputational harm from incidents involving violence or perceived discrimination.
